🐻 Bear Bag & Food Storage Guidelines
Distance Requirements
- Standard food: Minimum 100m from camp
- Strong odor food (fish, meat): Minimum 500m from camp
- Garbage: Store with food, never at camp
Bear Bag Method (PCT Method)
- Find a tree at least 4m tall and 30cm diameter at base
- Throw rope over a branch at least 4m high
- Hoist bag so it's 4m from trunk AND 4m off ground
- Keep 1m away from trunk horizontally
- Keep rope 10m from ground level
Alternative: Bear Canisters
Hard-sided bear canisters are required in many areas. They should be stored at least 100m from camp.
