⭐ Finding North with Stars

Using Polaris (North Star)
  • Polaris is located at the end of the Little Dipper's handle
  • To find it: first locate the Big Dipper
  • Follow the two stars at the end of the Big Dipper's bowl upward
  • They point to Polaris, which stays fixed in the north
  • Polaris is approximately 430 light-years away
Using Cassiopeia
  • Cassiopeia looks like a "W" or "M" shape
  • It circles Polaris in the opposite direction from the Big Dipper
  • Draw an imaginary line through the center of Cassiopeia to find Polaris
  • Cassiopeia is always opposite the Big Dipper across Polaris
