⭐ Finding North with Stars
Using Polaris (North Star)
- Polaris is located at the end of the Little Dipper's handle
- To find it: first locate the Big Dipper
- Follow the two stars at the end of the Big Dipper's bowl upward
- They point to Polaris, which stays fixed in the north
- Polaris is approximately 430 light-years away
Using Cassiopeia
- Cassiopeia looks like a "W" or "M" shape
- It circles Polaris in the opposite direction from the Big Dipper
- Draw an imaginary line through the center of Cassiopeia to find Polaris
- Cassiopeia is always opposite the Big Dipper across Polaris
Southern Hemisphere
In the southern hemisphere, use the Southern Cross constellation. The long axis points toward south.
