🌞 Shadow Stick Method (Step by Step)

  1. Find a clear, sunny spot - You need an unobstructed view of the sun for at least 15-20 minutes
  2. Drive a stick into the ground - Use a straight stick about 3 feet (1 meter) tall. Make sure it's firmly planted
  3. Mark the first shadow tip - Use a rock, stick, or scratch in the dirt to mark where the shadow's tip falls
  4. Wait 15-20 minutes - The shadow will move as the sun travels across the sky
  5. Mark the second shadow tip - After waiting, mark the new position of the shadow tip
  6. Draw your east-west line - Connect the two marks. This line runs approximately east-west
  7. Determine north-south - The first mark is west, the second is east (in northern hemisphere)
Why This Works

The sun moves from east to west across the sky. The shadow moves in the opposite direction, from west to east. By tracking the shadow's movement, you can determine east-west direction.
