Warm Water Rewarming Protocol
Warm water immersion is the gold standard for rewarming frozen tissue. The temperature must be carefully controlled: too cold and the tissue refreezes; too hot and you cause burns and additional tissue damage.
Temperature Guidelines
37-39°C (98-102°F): Safest range. Slower rewarming but lowest risk of burns or tissue damage. Suitable for field rewarming.
39-40°C (102-104°F): Standard medical recommendation. Faster than 37°C while remaining safe. Ideal if water temperature can be measured.
Above 42°C: Risk of burns. Never use water above 42°C.
Duration
Continue immersion until the tissue is thawed — it should be soft and pliable throughout, and color should return (bright red or pink is healthy). For superficial frostbite, this typically takes 15-30 minutes. Deep frostbite requires longer, and in field conditions, full rewarming may not be achievable without medical facilities.
